About Us
Our members and friends come from a wide variey of backgrounds, and all are accepted. We encourage each other
in our own free and responsible search for truth and meaning. In our search we abide by the seven Unitarian
Universalist principals found in our covenant.
Our Minister
The Rev. Dr. Tony Larsen has been the minister at Olympia Brown Unitarian
Universalist Church in Racine, Wisconsin since 1975.
He has become well known thoughout the country for his deeply moving, spiritual and often humorous
sermons.
Our History
Our congregation was one of the earliest churches in Racine, being founded in 1842, and called "The Universalist
Society of Racine."
In 1878 the Rev. Olympia Brown came to our church and served as its minister until 1887. Olympia Brown,
ordained in 1863, was the first
woman in the United States to be ordained by a regularly established denomination.
The history of our congregation
is filled with social justice and affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person, a
tradition we carry on today in our growing congregation.
We follow in the footsteps of our
Unitarian
and Universalist
heritages to provide a strong voice for social justice and liberal religion.
Our congregation is a member of the Unitarian Universalist
Central Midwest District (CMwD)
and the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
Our Mission
Accepting our diversity and bonded by our similarities, the Olympia Brown
Unitarian Universalist Church is an open supportive religious community.
Our liberal religious tradition nurtures,
educates and challanges people as we shepherd each other, family and friends, through life's pilgrimage. We come together
to develop, share, and celebrate religious and personal values that give help, hope and new life to all.
We seek to empower
individuals; we work for a just world. We are a voice for love among people, peace among nations and reverence for our planet.
